Why Are Christians Against Killing In Self Defense?

March 20, 2010

Why are Christians against killing in self defense, even though David killed Goliath?

And Joshua slaughtered hundreds of people. (My name sake has been covered in blood). Plus all the other killings in the bible. But Christians think it is a sin for a woman to kill a rapist in self defense. And does that mean the Christians think all the soldiers in Afghanistan, Iraq and the rest of the world are sinning on a regular basis while they are defending our freedom and doing their job.

I am a Christian but I can promise you this…if you break into my house I will shoot you like a lame horse. With extreme predjudice and I dare you to hurt my children.

I never realized Christians had a problem with killing in self-defense.

I have no problem with killing in self-defense. As long as it isn’t premeditated.

There is a difference between murder and killing.

Well god supports killing in direct genocidal offence so I find it rich that he is against self defence.

God killed many thousands more in the bible than Satan did, so I guess he kinda likes it. Its probably just a sin for women, cos God doesnt want them to do anything.

Well most Christians don’t consider self-defense a sin.

Perhaps some of the more pacifist sects do like the Quakers and Mennonites.

All of your examples come from the old Testament, most Christians more closely follow the New Testament (after Jesus). Perhaps one reason is that Jesus said if someone slaps you on one cheek, do not slap him back, but turn the other cheek to him and let him slap that as well.

I have no problem against killing in self defense. Of course, I wouldn’t want to, but sometimes it’s necessary. Unlike murder, it’s used to help yourself instead of hurting someone intentionally or out of anger.

Killing in self defense isn’t a sin, if it’s truly in self defense.

Defense of life is an honorable motive.

It depends upon whether the rapist is trying to kill her.

Goliath was trying to kill David.

If the soldiers just go out and slaughter a whole bunch of people for no reason in the name of freedom, yes. Thankfully, that’s not what they’re job is.

Not ALL Christians are against killing in self defense. The Christians that ARE opposed to it are called "Hypocrites" They’re well aware of all the slaughter caused by self-defense and the people that did it still got into heaven, but they still have a problem with it because they think murder itself is a problem and they don’t care if it’s in self defense or not.

thats we call double standard. three but one, not kill but murder, pork forbiden but consumed, … christians christians create your religion by your mind, by your wish.

I thought Christian supported "Turning the other cheek" which also mean s no self defense and retaliation… maybe I’m wrong, since I am, for one, not Christian.

Don’t lie about killing. You obviously don’t know.
    Thou shalt do no MURDER.

When someone tried to run me off the road, pulling the trigger was a no brainer. Literally. I had no thought about law or sin. Just stopping that crazy b@stard from killing me. I showed my pistol and yet he attacked.
Then he pulled over to pick glass out of his face. I missed.

We love as He loved us and gave His life for us, this Jesus is amazing.

You will get a lot of different answers with this question because all "Christians" are different as is will all individuals in the world. All people are different so I would need to see the website you found the information that 100% of "Christians" are against self defense. Besides, the story of David and Goliath was an old folk tale passed down by oral tradition by the Jewish priests’.

P.S. Don’t look at the details in the Bible… remember the big picture.

The bible supports killing in self defence. God said do not murder. Murder is something completelt different then killing in self defence. Read revelations ch 11. That is where you will find an answer to that question. The bible is not a myth and the Lord Jesus Christ does exhist and you don’t have to take my word for it. Ask him yourself. Jesus will answer if you seek him for an answer. Maybey not right away but keep asking him and he will eventually answer you. He answered many questions I have had

Got something to say?
