What type of martial arts should I try?

June 6, 2010

I’m looking for a certain type of martial arts, but the majority of what I’ve seen is grappling for some reason. I want to try something that uses pressure points and finds weak spots in your opponent to take them down with almost minimal effort.

if this is your goal, then aikido is your no 1 choice… it special designed for using pressure points and findings weak points in your opponent to take them down with almost minimal effort.
I’m not a big fan of it, if that’s what your aiming for, then definitely this is your tool.

so based on your criteria, how do judo and brazilian jiu-jitsu not fall into that category?
unless you wanna learn some like nerve pinch move like homer on the simpsons when he becomes the mayor’s bodyguard, i don’t know of any martial arts that could teach you that

You should def. try Choi Kwang Do. It’s really fun and you can socialize and also learn things that help you to be more aware of your surrounding. They also have things like the finger lock which takes your opponent down quickly and effortlessly for the most part (you practice in class against someone but you DON’T break their fingers!) they have many other things like that that you can practice also!

Aikido is the best choice, you seem to want minimal contact and a quick speedy takedown, this is good mindset for aikido, i have just recently started and it is extremely unique and it is a true japanese fighting artform, not ufc…or mma wich is an american distortion in my opinion…

so look in your area and see what you can find. aikido is a very spirit building art as well!
aikido is the best bet for you!;-)
    i hope i helped

Kyusho, Jujitsu, and Kickboxing are all good types to try. Kyusho mainly focuses on pressure points btw.

Take a look at Suenaka Ha Tetsugaku Ho Aikido. I have been studying for 1 1/2 years and LOVE it. It is a Japanese art which specializes in ‘non resistance’ and street effectiveness. This art does take time to become proficient in, but is well worth it. It teaches one to blend with an attack and use one’s opponents force against him/her while inflicting minimal harm and is excellent for a smaller person. There are petite ladies in my dojo (5’2") throwing around some sizable men (6’2") like paper airplanes!

Our school motto is "Let us have a universal spirit that loves and protects all creation an helps all things grow and develop. To unify mind and body and to become one with the universe is the ultimate purpose of my study."

Below is a link to our Hombu, or Home, Dojo for more information.
