What sort of self defense class should i take?
July 20, 2010
I live right outside Philadelphia and go into town with friends a lot. We all agreed we would all feel safer if we took some sort of self defense class, and maybe then my mom will get off my case about being a city goer and abandon the idea that all men are out to get me. Anyway, I’m looking for more than just a one time workshop, but an ongoing class that will help me defend myself. What should I do-kickboxing, judo, tae kwon do? Thanks!

Got something to say?

I would to suggest that you should take a kickboxing class. This kind of self defense is all around and is good on stand off fighting. In most attacks, stand off positions are preferred. If you take this class, you can develop your boxing and kicking skills both at a time and focuses mostly on both which could be very beneficial for you.
brazilian jiu jitsu (i think that’s how you spell it??…) or judo are both great activities, and in my opinion the best marshal arts out there.. go to youtube and check out both of them.. its sweet
Its very overrated but jiu jitsu is good for real life fighting, But about any of it would be good. How old are you. I’m 21 so besides of doing martial arts I’m a CCW permit holder and just carry a gun. Works just as good as being the baddest mofo on the block lol
If you are looking for something that will actually help you to defend yourself if you need to, I would highly recommend that instead of going for something flashy like Taekwondo, You should go for something practical. I used to take Jeet Kune Do, and it is a very practical martial art primarily designed for effectiveness in Close quarters combat. I would also recommend looking into Krav Maga, the Close quarter combat system of the Israeli commandos. I hope this information is useful.
I’ve been involved in Tae Kwon Do for about 30 years now. All three of my daughters were required to take the classes and all really enjoyed them. One of my daughters actually had to use her training once and came out of it quite nicely. Go for it!
More important is the teacher and the quality of the instruction than anything else. Visit a number of places and watch how they work. You’ll get a better feel for which class you would like to take.
There is one rule that has to be applied though. All the training in the world is useless unless you are ready to be brutally aggressive in applying the training when you need it. The only way to stop an attacker is to fight back without warning and do your very best to put them on the ground completely. No half measures or you’ll end up hurt.
