What self defense classes should I take?

June 28, 2010

I am a cadet at a police department and I am looking into taking some self defense classes. I have narrowed it down to Aikijutsu and Aikido. I know both are similar but which one is more effective to officers? Thanks guys!

chose the style that has the best qualified instructor, other than that, cost and convenient location are important for long-term continuation, which is necessary for muscle memory development

As a law enforcement officer, you are going to want to be familiar with disarming and joint locks since striking an attacker can land you in trouble (police brutality). Aikido, as far as I know, is more about using your opponent’s force against them and can be very helpful to a police officer. I’m not too familiar with Aikijutsu, but I’m guessing it involves a combination of strikes and joint locks. Both would be good to know, but Jujutsu and Judo would as well.

Got something to say?
