What martial arts program would be best for me?

July 15, 2009

Question about martial arts suitability..

I am looking for a martial arts program that would be best for a guy like me. I am 5'8" 225 lbs with a 34 inch waist. I am a bodybuilder and I go to the gym 3-5 days a week. I am not the smallest guy in the world so I am not sure which program would be for me. What do you guys think?

In all honesty, it really doesn't matter. Take the one that you find most interesting, the one you will stick with. The word best doesn't really fit into martial arts.

Hmmm…..I'm not too sure I would check into a couple places and ask at the desk what they suggest! Have a great day! =)

    Ninjitsu,Jujitsu, or Taebo.

    Kidding about Taebo.

just go with Karate/Taekwando. Jujitsu is pretty tough, but most useful in everyday life

whatever you want to do : )

height or body type only really affects how you use a technique not what techniques you can use.

i would suggest kung fu, muay thai or ju-jitsu, they are a lot of fun and good solid styles to train in.

the most important thing about choosing a style is the club itself and the teacher there, look around and find a club that trains hard and that has a real master.

    Good Luck : )

depends…do you prefer striking? grappling? competitions? self defense? you sound like a wrestler to me….so maybe bjj, judo, wrestling etc…

Jeet kune do, Once you studied Bruce Lee's art then you wouldn't have a problem with self defense or any street fights. Try also ninjitsu if you want to learn self defense. If you want to be good in competition then try Isshinryu Karate

Maybe boxing since its practical. and its easy to learn. But if you don't want that, maybe judo would suit you..

train MMA, get the best of all worlds. Just get in the right club so you can excel and go somewhere in the sport. It is the all round best as far as reality, and in the right club- man the limits are endless.
This would include a striking art like Thai boxing, Western Boxing, BJJ for mat , Judo for throws and T.D's, Greco for TD and Ground Defense and or Sambo …. you will be well rounded.

Cross train MMA and see what suits you the best. Even though you are a heavy guy. dont be surprised when you start to spar or roll (jujitsu) and you get man handled by much smaller people. Leave your ego at the door or someone might hold that choke just a few seconds longer or forget to pull that punch if you know what I mean.
