What martial arts or fighting style class should I take?

June 25, 2010

I am considering taking some form of martial arts or maybe kickboxing, but I don’t want to directly "fight" someone to practice. I want to learn self-defense and possibly get into shape. I am normally careful to not hurt others doing things like this, and if I do I feel really bad. Should I really take a fighting style class?

Any good fighter will have a good solid defense in ground fighting such as BJJ.. All your martial arts is wasted if I can get you off your feet and on your back….

However, for standing and attacking sure, kickboxing or straight Karate is fine.. The best fighters have the best instructors and work hard…

i train in brazilian jiu jitsu (bjj) and have trained in muay thai, bjj is like wrestling but instead of using power and strength you use your opponents momentum to take them off gaurd and you actually have to think about what your going to do, muay thai is kick-boxing but with elbows and knees. If your into the ufc a great muay thai fighter is Anderson Silva. And Royce Gracie was the one to start brazilian jiu jitsu in the UFC. I train at Easton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Colorado which is great i would chose one of these

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) is a great martial art. BJJ is a ground fighting and grapplign martial art that uses technique and leverage to enable a smaller, weaker person to defeat a larger, stronge person using proper technique, chokes, and joint locks.

Royce Gracie used it to great affect in the early UFC tournaments, competing in the first 5 and winning 3 of them, all by submission. BJJ is good for you because you use chokes and joint locks to hold your opponent in place and get them to tapout. If they chose not to tap, you either choke them to sleep or break their bones.

Got something to say?
