Well, learning what positive relationships should look like ... how to handle bad relationships ... how to regain self-eseem when being verbally/physically attacked ... what resources are available ... is very much needed.

I would like it to be a combination of wrestling and kickboxing, perhaps with some karate thrown in. It would cover what to do when one is grabbed from any direction, attacked with a weapon, facing multiple attackers, etc.

NICE007: No, you'd want to try something more advanced. Karate (at least the style I practice) is pretty wimpy in comparison to the other options available.

Well, when my husband taught a women's self defense course, it was taekwondo (sp?) based. He covered all the typical situations in which rape and date rape occurs. How to defend yourself in a car, what to do when attacked from behind, etc. He also taught the major pressure points and how to injure them.

To consider self-defense, you must consider the attackers purpose and how he is attacking. Most martial arts are defending against a punch, kick, ... but most women are attacked differently.

I would say maybe a special technique should be developed which is catered to specific attacks that women receive. An possible example would be some type of corkscrew that can be placed in the hands and stabbed into the attackers kidneys in his back if she is being raped. Maybe grappling techniques.... just suggestions. No gentleman's/lady's fighting where you are not out to kill the person but spare... the all out stuff.... like Israeli Defense where they teach you to break ankles and knees caps and throats(not sparring)

It would be (my brother is an mma instructor) a combination of practices useful in any form of accostment and should be as disabling as possible w/out a lot of moves to memorize (I know I don't always remember stuff when I panic)......

Learning to use Tazers or pepper sprays doesnt need an elaborate self-defense course. Of course, Karate is a good idea for handling such situations defensively. The main idea is to stun the perpetrator WHETHER ITS A HE OR A SHE (gosh !) and relieve yourself from that situation. Therefore, any self-defense course that can equip you with such skills is worth it.

Edit to Johno : Ong Bak and the other movie with that same guy are some of my fav. actions movies. Muay Thai is what its called, and its deadly too. The movies show how fatal it could be to either of them if the blows werent dealt properly.

First with the presence of mind to survive.
Second by spending time on whatever the displine is to be good at it.
Then we can look at the rest of whats and hows.
tai jitsu, tai ji (not the bs gentle exercise, I mean the rather dangerous martial art, oddly the only one I know of that teaches a method to break a neck with a slap - point made?) and perhaps some other discipline.
