Question about a womens self defense course..
What are it's elements and what concerns does it cover?
Actually, I should ask what would you like to have it cover.
I would suggest to all the women to purchase a book called THE GIFT OF FEAR. Without understanding what happens to you when a violent attack occurs martial arts will not save you but with both together you will win out.
When that knife is suddenly pressed to your throat or that gun shoved in your face your heart rate will go from 60bpm to 200 bpm in about 3 seconds you will have tunnel vision lose all fine motor skills and the ability to think constructively.
The book covers various scenarios from actual rape and spousal/relationship abuse cases. In all of them there was a point were a different decision than the one they made would have saved them from the ordeal.
65% of rapes and assaults are commited by someone the victim knows a family member or a co worker or a casual aquaintance. Once you know and can recognize the danger signals you can prepare yourself phsycologicaly to meet the assault physically or escape before it gets that far. When you are prepared psychologically the heart rate will still go up as the body prepares for conflict but not to the crippling extent previously stated.
TED BUNDY was charming charismatic well dressed handsome and intelligent and a serial killer .The book also covers his methods and how to recognize them. His most common act was "little boy lost" and "helpless male in need of your help" the opposite of that is someone insisting you need help and wont take no for an answer.
Pre-emption or recognizing someone for what they are should be your primary technique martial arts your last resort. He probably wont be scruffy looking or jump out of an alley on a dark street or be hiding in your closet when you come home. Gun point abductions happen all the time in broad daylight and rapes occur in bedrooms with a party going on in the next room.
By all means study a martial art learn to use everyday items as weapons attract as much attention as possible .They are looking for easy prey, not noisy prey that attracts unwelcome attention.
Walk proud and confident act confident and dont let the confidence of knowing martial arts let you think you can handle it at any point if it turns nasty like everything there is a point of no return you will lose if it gets that far . Recognize the signs early and get out of there and you may never have to put your skills to the test.

Well, learning what positive relationships should look like … how to handle bad relationships … how to regain self-eseem when being verbally/physically attacked … what resources are available … is very much needed.
I would like it to be a combination of wrestling and kickboxing, perhaps with some karate thrown in. It would cover what to do when one is grabbed from any direction, attacked with a weapon, facing multiple attackers, etc.
NICE007: No, you'd want to try something more advanced. Karate (at least the style I practice) is pretty wimpy in comparison to the other options available.
hey there how are you doing,
I think Karate is the best self defense .
Well, when my husband taught a women’s self defense course, it was taekwondo (sp?) based. He covered all the typical situations in which rape and date rape occurs. How to defend yourself in a car, what to do when attacked from behind, etc. He also taught the major pressure points and how to injure them.
To consider self-defense, you must consider the attackers purpose and how he is attacking. Most martial arts are defending against a punch, kick, … but most women are attacked differently.
I would say maybe a special technique should be developed which is catered to specific attacks that women receive. An possible example would be some type of corkscrew that can be placed in the hands and stabbed into the attackers kidneys in his back if she is being raped. Maybe grappling techniques…. just suggestions. No gentleman's/lady's fighting where you are not out to kill the person but spare… the all out stuff…. like Israeli Defense where they teach you to break ankles and knees caps and throats(not sparring)
It would be (my brother is an mma instructor) a combination of practices useful in any form of accostment and should be as disabling as possible w/out a lot of moves to memorize (I know I don't always remember stuff when I panic)……
Lessons at the shooting range.
Learning to use Tazers or pepper sprays doesnt need an elaborate self-defense course. Of course, Karate is a good idea for handling such situations defensively. The main idea is to stun the perpetrator WHETHER ITS A HE OR A SHE (gosh !) and relieve yourself from that situation. Therefore, any self-defense course that can equip you with such skills is worth it.
Edit to Johno : Ong Bak and the other movie with that same guy are some of my fav. actions movies. Muay Thai is what its called, and its deadly too. The movies show how fatal it could be to either of them if the blows werent dealt properly.
marksmanship
First with the presence of mind to survive.
Second by spending time on whatever the displine is to be good at it.
Then we can look at the rest of whats and hows.
tai jitsu, tai ji (not the bs gentle exercise, I mean the rather dangerous martial art, oddly the only one I know of that teaches a method to break a neck with a slap – point made?) and perhaps some other discipline.
Muay Boran is a very ancient and deadly martial art, it might be hard to find a teacher though.

This clip from the movie "Ong Bak" will give you an idea of the style.

It would be a good martial art for women to try because it concentrates on taking out your opponent with one single blow.
Edit @ Know i All, it's one of my fav movies to, awesome fight scenes
I took one in highschool, but forgot everything.
It's probably best to just remember everything or write down the stuff you learn…
