What is the best way for a woman to learn how to fight? What type of self defense?
July 21, 2009
Question about fighting for women..
I am interested in learning how to defend my self in general, so if I was attacked by a man I would want to know how to fight him off, or even a giant woman, LOL!!
Well I was just wondering what type of self defense I should look into. Boxing? MMA? kickboxing?

Got something to say?

I understand your situation and MMA is definately not the appropriate one. It's limited by the rules of what you can't do and designed for 3 x 5 minute rounds.
The best thing you can do for yourself is look up Krav Maga. Krav Maga has boxing, kickboxing, jiujitsu in it, just in a much more appropriate composition for self defence. Or if you have longer, say 2 years, then Wing Chun would be better. If you look up the history of Wing Chun you would see that it's the same as what you are asking.
Please at least look them up and see for yourself. I believe Krav Maga will be the best thing for you. You may wish to youtube "human weapon krav maga" and "fight quest krav maga"
I would love to learn kickboxing…
I like the ole Kick-'Em-In-The-Balls-And-Poke-Their-Eyes method.
Very affective. Hahaha.
Well a strike to the groin, eye gouge, or a throat punch will always be effective. However, if you're looking to be more proficient in self defense, I think a good choice for you might be Krav Maga if it's available. It's a very brutal fighting system, but also brutally effective and will work for you no matter what size you or your opponent is. It will allow you to get out of danger quickly where as some other martial arts might not be as effective for that. Boxing is good, but won't help you if you go to the ground, MMA is a mixture of everything, so a lot to learn, and kickboxing is good, but not quite as effective in taking someone down if need be.
Good luck and if you do take something, hope you never need to use it!
U should google the MA schools in ur area and visit them. Talk with the instructors and see if they teach u how to apply what u learn in class for a street situation. Then decide what u like best. Good luck
i would take something like wu shu or jiu jistu
The best self defense is to not be in a situation where you need to worry about self defense. Being aware of situations and being smart enough to walk away is the key.
The second thing is, you don't fight a man or even a giant woman. You escape. You never stand there and try to vanquish someone bigger and stronger than you, or even smaller and weaker. That requires quick reflexes, excellent targeting, and a general lack of concern for the other person's well being. That means some good training and practice.
I recommend that you visit some martial arts schools, YWCA's, YMCA's, and community recreation programs in your area to find out if they have a self defense program.
ok honey this is what you do when a guy tries to mug you or rape you act like you want to give it to them and when they least expect it BAMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! you come in with a SQUEEZE grip his testes with all your strength and then ppunch him in the face and runn he wont catch you bc he will be in soo much pain it will be hard to walk
styles u should consider:
BJJ, krav maga, mma, jeet kun do, maybe wing chun
see if any of these are near u and talk to the instructor about your specific goals
You might want to look into a low cost non-lethal self defense weapon. There are many that are made just for women. You can check some out at http://www.selfdefensewatch.com/books-dvds.php
I would say hapkido. I have used it two times to fight off guys who were much bigger than me. It's great for girls because it involves a lot of techniques that u can use to defeat a bigger and stronger attacker.
Kyokushin Karate or Enshin Karate is a good place to start IMO. Boxing is good to supplement your karate, I intend to take that myself as face punches aren't practiced in karate sparring and they don't seem to put much emphasis on rapid punching which is what most people will do in a fight other than tackle you. Bjj & Judo to complete your MA abilities is great if you can commit to it.
