VERY stupid boxing question?

October 2, 2009

Question

I hear boxing is great exercise and they are offering a womens course at the hospital where I conduct my research. I don’t really want to wail on someone else and I don’t want someone else wailing on me. Are there benefits I’m not thinking of? I want to do it because the training is intense and I want to learn self defense…but I don’t want to be punched. Give me some pros/cons?

Boxing is great exercise…It works out the whole body..
And is great for the self confidence…..Oh and you are going to get hit…Often. But wear the mouth guard, the head gear, and gloves and you will be OK…

Boxing begins (As most of the martial arts) with the proper stance. You will learn how to maintain balance….How to move and always be within the balence positions.

Next you will learn all about guarding against a punch…And how to return the fists to a home position after a guarding or punching movement.

Next you will learn all of the punches….And how to use them to the fullest….Terms like right cross..left cross. Upper cut…Jab.

And next you are going to learn that a punch isnt gonna kill you. (I used to box)

If you want to learn a proven less strenious form of self defense….You might want to find someone that teaches
Aikido or my favorite jiu jitsu…

jiu jitsu is an excellent form in that it focuses a lot on using the opponents force against him……..Therefore "The bigger they are the harder they fall" becomes a reality.

Good luck with the boxing……You are going to enjoy the release of energy…

Oh yea by the way boxing is where two people get in a ring and punch each other for a timed period….If you can wail on them more than they wail on you …You win the round!!!
Someone counts each legal blow and the person with the most points (And still standing) wins!

You should get a punching bag.

Physical fitness. Toned muscles. Increased strength, energy, self-confidence. Improved reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and rhythm.

    It’s like combat dancing.

if you have the right trainers the chances of being hurt in gym workouts is slim-first you should have on protective vest-head gear with a face mask and normally you should have 16-20-oz gloves to spar with versus 6 or 8 oz in real fights-good luck and happy punching

You don’t have to wail on anyone! I used to work out like this all the time — you can shadow box, hit the heavy bag or work out on the speed bag. No need for bruises at all!.

You don’t need to go to a gym to get the exercise. To start you can work out at home. Just watch a boxing match or two and try to emulate the types of punches thrown and head/foot movements of boxers. Then, just shadow box in a room with plenty of open space(probably by yourself–otherwise you’ll feel pretty dumb). Throwing punches against air increases your workout because there is no "bounce" from a punching bag, so you have to pull your punches back(be sure to snap them). Do this for a few minutes, against an imaginary opponent-circling them, moving your head, and throwing some different combinations and you will see how good of a workout it is.

There is great exercise benefits from it and a lot of people train and never really box but what I would reccommend instead is Tae Bo which Billy Blanks adapted from boxing and Tae Kwon Do. It has all the intensity and would help you in self defense but you don’t have to worry about getting a bloody nose or anything. A great cardio/aerobic work out that they probably offer at your local gym or you could buy your own video. I won’t bore you with the benefits when you can check them out for yourself at this link.

If you still want to go ahead with a regular boxing work out that is cool too but it sounded to me that this is something more of what you might be looking for.

PS Not a stupid question at all :o ) I hope you find something challenging and yet enjoyable because if you don’t enjoy what you are doing it makes 15 minutes seem like two hours. Have fun!!!

get a punching bag, if you are afraid of getting hit or possibly cut(one of the reasons I did boxing very limitedly) then don’t sign up. It is a great sport and you will learn self defense, as well as stay in shape.

Not a stupid question at all.

You will get in the best shape of your life.

A good trainer will not let you spar until you are ready. It is fun and there is a very low risk of injury.

Just hitting the Heavy Bag is a blast. It is a great pressure reliever.

    Gymn classes are really fun.

Boxing is a real sport with real skill. IT IS NOT WAILING ON SOMEONE AND LETTING THEM WAIL ON YOU.

    Try it. You’ll like it.

I don’t think this is a stupid question. If one of your main goals is to get fit then boxing should be very good for you. After all, most boxers have very good fitness levels. As far as self defense goes, I train in a Reality Based Self Defense system and I love it. Of course, our goal like yours is to not get hit. However, this can sometimes prove to be a difficult task. No matter how good your defense is, the reality of fighting is that sometimes you will get hit. Whatever you choose, I wish you well finding what you are looking for.

    Jim
