Using A Machete in Self Defense?
December 24, 2009
What would happen in court if you kill an intruder with a machete in self defense?
There are always situations where a person breaks into a house then gets shot by the house owner in self defense, but what if a person instead had a machete or sword and hacked the person to pieces in self defense?
Guns put nice little holes into the body, but a large blade would take off limbs or disembowel a person, how would people in court react when you say you acted in self defense?

Got something to say?

In Texas if they are in your house illegally you have every right to kill them! Its called the castle law look it up. Here they would probably just ask you why you didn’t just shoot them.
I’d research your local laws because in most laws as long as the intruder is in your house then anything that you do (gun, etc) should be legal as a use of self defense.
Don’t quote me though, that may not be true in all states
As long as it was done in the defense of the people and not the property, and you didn’t "whack" them more than a couple of times, you would be fine.
Where I live it’s legal to kill an intruder by using any means.
Depends on the state and jurisdiction.
A reasonable person has the right to defend his home. A man’s home is his castle.
It’s called the Castle Doctrine which refers to a court case that made it to the US Supreme Court.
The problem with using a machete or sword would be when have you stopped the threat?
I THINK YOU WOULD GET INTO LEGAL TROUBLE WITH THE MACHETE…….I THINK IT IS A FELONY TO HAVE IT.
BUT DEFENDING YOURSELF IN YOUR HOUSE..THE COPS WILL NOT BRING CHARGES.
If your life is in danger or you are in fear of great bodily harm hack away till the THREAT is removed.
Keep whacking for fun after he is down and he will sue you for sure.
If he lives he will sue. Make sure the first whack is enough to cancell Christmas for the dirtbag and call it a day.
If self defense is justified, this depends on where you are and the laws, your justified in using enough force to stop the aggression, whether with a firearm, machete, or rolled up newspaper. The big problem with an edge weapon is when does self defense turn to murder. One ot two stabs or whacks might be seen as defensive. Four five six, eighteen slashes will be seen by most jurors as manslaughter.
