Unusual Martial Arts Weapons and Techniques?
November 24, 2009
Why do martial arts people use unusual weapons and techniques?
Why is it that martial arts people use unusual weapons such as nunchucks, flying stars, throwing smoke bombs, or weird swords, when it would be much easier to kill with a shotgun?

Good point. Nunchaku were originally a rice flail OR a horse bridle and when the Japanese conquered Okinawa they would not allow anyone to carry weapons other than the Samarai, so people learned to fight with farm implements. The others you've names were traditional weapons of Ninjas and only a small part of Japan even used these – though in America one would assume they were and still are all over Japan! I guess people still use those things for tradition, I would rather train in a martial art like Hapkido or carry a shotgun!
Some martial arts – such as Hapkido, practice disarms of clubs, knives and guns – but not exotic weapons and only train with readily available materials such as walking canes, knife, club and belts/rope. Krav Maga, Kali, Silat, Systema, Jeet Kune Do also would not have the "traditional" weapons such as those you have listed and if you used weapons they would be knife or club.
most weapons were invented before conventional firearms. plus, the weapons were mostly farming tools, as peasants weren't allowed to have weapons.
because many traditional martial arts haven't changed in 400 years.
they were used before guns. Nunchuks used to be tools for cutting down crops then it was used as a weapon. Flying stars were what the ninja used in feudal japan. Smoke bombs… i donno lol, Wierd swords, i'm assuming you're talking about the chinese. It's all religion based and forms so people can get used to moving that way, it's like doing a handstand, you have to practice a lot to get use to it. That's what weapons and forms were for in martial arts, and it was passed down to the modern days.
Hi Pompom !
In todays world, yes its more effecient and practical to use guns as opposed the many okinawan farming implements.
The reality is that Okinawan Kobudo has no the practical in todays settings. Why people continue to train in it. Several reasoning are:
1) Its about preservation of a martial arts heritage (Okinawa).
2) Its also a great tools for supplementary exercise.
There are many reasons other may be able to chimed in with, but these are just few my personal thoughts.
Hope this helps !
there were no guns when most of the martial arts styles were conceptualized, and even now a gun can only do so much. what happens if you gun jams, or you run out of ammo? if you don't know how to fight then you're screwed. you shouldn't put too much faith in weapons in general. swords and nunchucks and whatever weapon may not be readily available at any given time, so learning a martial art fighting style is necessary.
