Time To Get Good At Self Defense?

Question about timeframe to acquire self defense skills
How long would it take to get comfortable at self defense?
I know this is is a difficult thing to answer. There is a self defense class that i would like to take. Its based on Hapkido I believe but its for street self defense. Now, im a bit of a small guy and im just wondering, with average determination how long can i expect to train before i would feel comfortable defending myself in the "average" situation. Again I know there are A LOT of variables here, but can anyone give me any kind of idea what to expect? I really only have 4 or 5 months to train…

Got something to say?

it all depend on how your body responds to that training system, when i first started martial arts it was a bit difficult, but as the months went by it got easier, and if you don't put in the time of practicing its like it never happened.
becoming an apt fighter in self defense really has no time reference; it's entirely situational. you might only learn how to deliver an elbow blow, but if you walk out of the gym that night and get attacked, that elbow could save your life.
in your case, it really depends on a) how long the classes are, b)how much training you are doing outside of class, and c) how much effort you put in. the more time you spend training and studying, the more it becomes second nature to you. and, in a real-life self defense situation, you will sink into an adrenal state, in which case, your muscle memory will have to take over to save your life.
so, in all honesty, the length of time it takes to become comfortable with your abilities really depends on you.
4 to 5 months will be a good amount of time to build a solid foundation to start with.
Four or Five months should give you enough of skill practice to let you feel that you could defend yourself.
Like you said, there are a lot of variables. But if you are dedicated to your training, then four or five months should make you feel that you are okay to defend yourself to a point that you could get away. I'm not saying that you will be at a point where you could take the guy out, but you should feel safe enough to take him down and get away.
Training is different for everyone though. Dedication is also different in everyone. But dedication is everything in Martial Arts.
That's not a universal for everyone, but at 4-5 months you should be able to defend yourself against someone of similar size and strength who does not train.
If you have a good instructor and you work hard you could get a good base if the training is focused just on self defense.
But you real need more time and even then there is no guaranty you will know what you will need.
But some times just the confidants the comes with the training is all you will ever need to know. I would recommend you do the classes. You can only benefit from them if the instructor is good.
first be weary of BASED ON training it could be a bogus gym or dojo check it out if it is legit 4 to 5 months will put you at a place you will not be leave.
it tackes 7 months… but me 1 week is enoughf
Perhaps a life time.
Long , long time .
Lot of training and dedication .
Everybody is different , some people are just born to be martial artists , some are like wooden log .
If you have 4-5 months to learn , forget it .
3 , 4 months
