The content is okay, but the quality of the book is terrible. The pages are falling out because the glue is not holding them. I take good care of my books, but this one is very poor quality.

After reading "Concealed Carry: The Shooter's guide to Selecting Handguns" any book on this theme would have a rough time measuring up. I purchased The Concealed Handgun Manual after reading the reviews including the one accusing the author of being a racist. In the real life stories, Caucasian is the assumed ethnicity, in other words if the subject was of any other ethnicity it was mentioned (except the girl shot by her ex-boyfriend). The author is not racist, just narrow minded. That's my two cents, your mileage may vary.
OK, back to the matter at hand: The book does accomplish its stated goals. But Wiley Clapp's book kicks butt. What takes Ted Bonnet a chapter to cover Mr. Clapp does in two sentences. If you want on novel on this subject (I did not) with real life stories this book has something to offer.

The chapters on safety and handling; basic shooting; and advanced shooting are particularly worthwhile for the novice. (Note, the graphic on the front cover shows a woman with her revolver aimed upward which violates the principle that one should never point a gun in a direction he or she doesn't want to shoot . . . what goes up must come down, including bullets. Do as the book says to, not as it pictures. )Experienced shooters take note: Mr. Bird contends that the . 38 Special and 9 MM are adequate choices for a concealed carry handgun when paired with hollow-point bullets. If you think anything smaller than a . 40 Cal. S&W lacks sufficient stopping power you won't find what you're looking for here. Better you should check out Chuck Taylor's book on Combat Handgunnery.

Whoever edited this book should REALLY rethink their profession. If you've already decided that you want to carry a handgun for self defense, you can skip the first 100 pages of this book. If you already know something about handguns, there's almost another 100 pages you can skip. All the information contained in this book on actually shooting a gun in self defense (tactics), you can fit into a pamphlet, while the most irrelevant, meaningless details of dozens of self-defense stories are elaborated on exhaustively.
Then there's the racist innuendos. White criminals are simply "criminals". Black and Hispanic criminals are specifically "black" and "Hispanic". I find it very hard to take advice from small-minded or ignorant people.
The chapter on state regulations fell far short of my expectations.
The author may know a lot about defending himself with a handgun - but it's painfully obvious he's spent more time shooting than he ever has writing, or reading for that matter (beyond maybe Guns & Ammo). While trying perhaps to be comprehensive, he totally loses focus. The only thing this is a "manual" for is how to almost completely miss the point of your title in 500 pages or less.

There are just plain better books to read on the subject. I especially enjoyed the quote from the woman being stalked by her former boyfriend: "God helps those who help themselves". Supposedly a quote from the Holy Bible. She should have read the Bible closer. She would not find that quote there. She's also a supposed black belt. Perhaps she is. SO WHAT? She's obviously unable to protect herself through this martial art, whatever the discipline. She said they taught her never to use a weapon that someone could take away from her and use against her. Having studied Okinawa Te, I'm somewhat familiar with the art of the open hand. If this is truly what she took away from all the years she spent in a dojo, then she must have earned this black belt in some way other than the traditional way. Someone should have taught her awareness and observation - she would have been much better off. She shouldn't have to get bitten by a snake before she learns to identify it. Additionally, within the text there are several statements that seem to foster the ideas of an author who might be a bit racist. A criminal is a criminal. That is enough. Sure, the author is entitled to his opinion. I wouldn't buy this book. My opinion is that it isn't worth the effort to read.
