Well I must admit two things right off the bat, and the first is I have a funny story to share with you about this book and the other is that I have to admit that I didn’t actually buy this book yet. So you are probably asking yourself, “How can Shawn be writing a review on a book he hasn’t bought yet?” Well that is where the funny story comes in.

I first became aware of this book when I was browsing the martial arts section at one of our local “big chain” bookstores. Seeing Loren Christensen’s name on it I immediately picked it up and started reading it. Well lo and behold about an hour and a half later I finished reading it, so I didn’t buy it at the time, but I am planning on actually buying it at a later date, which brings up my only small complaint concerning this book and that is the lack of descriptive text throughout the entire book.

Now please don’t misinterpret my slight criticism for anything more than my desire to see a little bit better explanations on some of the techniques showcased in this book, because I still give this book a well deserved 5 star rating.

This book is literally loaded with numerous photographs showing you how to execute a variety of trips, sweeps, and throws. However, as I just stated earlier, the descriptive text is a bit lean and really could have been fattened up a bit with more information concerning each technique shown in this book. A good example of what I am talking about can be found in any book in the Judo Masterclass Techniques series of which here are a couple of the titles; Pick-ups (Judo Masterclass Techniques) and Seoi-Nage (Masterclass Series).

Now having told you my one small critique, I must wholeheartedly say that if you have any experience whatsoever in throwing, then this will probably not be much of a concern as you probably are already well aware of how to correctly execute each of the techniques. However, one can always learn more and perhaps there are one or two little nuggets of wisdom that you still need to glean from a particular technique.

I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading it again, preferably this time in the comfort of my own home, and having it as a permanent resident in my personal library.

I liked the book! Good pictures. Clear instructions. Easy to grasp the intention of the techniques and good division into sequences makes it easy to practise as well.
Readers should be familiar with judo though since it in my opinion is based on judo techniques transferred to the street. For max effect I would combine this book with e. g. krav maga techniques since you cannot rely solely on take downs. The “enemy” just won’t lie still just because you say so. So, for good application of judo techniques I would recommend it.

After writing some 40,000 martial arts books (in actuality something over 40 I believe), you’d think that Loren Christensen would run out of new things to say. Not so. He and Mireles have penned another real winner here. It’s insightful, pithy, well-illustrated, and very practical.

As the old adage goes, the ground hits harder than the fist. Maybe not always, but it certainly can, particularly if your adversary doesn’t know how to fall properly. The book thoughtfully organized, covering the mechanics of trips, sweeps, and throws before moving into the details. Trips, sweeps, ground fighting sweeps, throws, spins, and combinations are covered in detail, including important nuances that make the techniques work. The final sections cover falling safely, reasonable force, and some thoughts on “ground and pound. ”

While hands-on instruction invariably trumps any book, clear photographs and logical progressions make the information easy to follow. In fact the photography is truly outstanding, with some of the clearest action shots I’ve seen in any book of this type. While judo and jujitsu are more know for using these techniques, us karateka have them in our curricula too. I wholeheartedly recommend it for practitioners of most any martial art!
