Most intense and realistic martial art for real life self defense?

August 30, 2010

What would you say is the most intense and realistic style of martial arts, that can be applied to reality self defense situations that you may potentially find yourself? For example, a martial art that covers weapons training, weapons retention, defense against weapons, defense against multiple attackers. What has been proven effective?

I have used shotokan for real-world defence (bouncer ) for many years. It is as good as the instruction you got for it. That said, there are many other arts that also fill the bill. Goju is another karate style I have seen work exceptionally well in real applications, and I worked with a kenpo guy who was as good as they get. The real answer lies in the instruction of the art, not the art itself. Sport styles such as the watered down, tournament-focused styles of karate and tkd, MMA, bjj, and all "homemade" "styles", prove to be weak for self protection, largely due to possibilities of multiple opponents, and other unpredictable circumstances. Find any combat oriented school with a good instructor and work hard at learning. It is hard, but it comes to you when you work hard enough for it.

I would personally prefer kickboxing. This kind of self defense technique is good at streets. I found kickboxing as the best since you will learn to fight on foot or standing. As for other mixed martial arts techniques which requires grappling or ground fighting as their forte, I would personally not choose this type of fighting as this could be dangerous if you have 2 or more opponents.

Got something to say?
