Is it possible to defend oneself well after a short self defense course?
July 16, 2009
Question about self defense course length
Sometimes there are relatively short self defense courses at a school, or at an university or wherever.
In those kind of courses you don't acquire a good physical capacity of course(if you previously wasn't in a good shape)
So, can someone defend well after finishing that kind of self defense courses?

Got something to say?

Depends on the level of skill you come up against. If greater you can defend up to the point you have knowledge.
You can probable defent your ballz at best.
You can always defend yourself, regardless of whether or not you've taken any classes at all. You will be better equipped to do so if you've studied a martial art, though. However, people fail to realize that knowledge is half of the battle – whether it be taught, self taught, discovered, or found by blind luck. If you can discover HOW something workys, normally you'll soon discover WHY it works. This gives ANYONE an opportunity to 'defend oneself' in battle.
However, training will help tremendously, and should not be overlooked. In most asian philosophies, it is said that
"If the mind is strong and the body is slow – one will think without swift action. If the body is strong and the mind is slow, one will act without thinking. Both of these roads lead to defeat. To achieve 'victory' (which is a relative term in battle – sorry for the edit.), one must find both in equal proportions."
Hope this helps – it is what I have come to know in my experience in Martial Arts.
After taking a course you will be in a better position to defend yourself if you hadn't taken that course. You will also be much better if you have learn martial arts from a qualified instructor over time not just a 4 to 6 weeks course.
Generally a self defense course are taught to get you interested in learning martial arts. The other objective would be mostly for women and children to escape if someone tries to attack or kidnap them. It will not make them a great fighter or great martial artist. But it will give them a few tools and confidence to escaped if grabbed or attacked.
Yes and No bl2008. It is possible to defend yourself. It is a question of degree. You ask if you can defend yourself WELL. That depends on the attack.
Awareness of the dangers is the #1 tool in self defense and you should learn good information in even a short class.
You are more prepared after taking any class, even a short one.
However, you are still at risk and need to know that a short course is not going to train you to defend against every danger. No course will.
You CAN but probably not well.
You won't have enough training, conditioning, or reflexes to use the techniques.
This is why people train on a constant basis in martial arts.
Those quick short classes are not self-defense.
You become proficient in self defense when you learn a martial art.
You cannot think about what you will do when attacked.
The purpose of martial arts training is to develop instinct so that you just react without thinking.
Otherwise you will fail.
