If you’re already looking at three different arts, it sounds more like you might want to just go for some MMA in general. However, there is no system that will teach you to beat up two or more equal size men at once. The best defense for that is two legs running quickly in the opposite direction.

Yes that’s a good combination. Most street fights end after a quick exchange of strikes but knowing takedowns will also be very useful.

I would say for basic, competent, self-defense against an average unarmed attacker, Judo and Boxing are a good combo.

I think Shotokan is probaby ok but, having 3 arts is just too much to learn at once. I think someone may be able to handle two at once though. Shotokan is just normally doesn’t teach with full-contact sparring or competitions. So, they train with cooperative, no touch, or semi-contact sparring. It’s ok but, Boxing’s full-contact sparring and competitions is better.

Boxing will teach you how to fight with your fists. You have proof whether you can do that well or not in sparring and competitions. You can experience some of the things you will face in a real fight: Fear, pain, exhaustion, winning and losing, determination, KO’ing an opponet, etc. You will learn good things. A lot of people recommed boxing for basic self-defense. No, it doesn’t have "dirty" fighting techniques like eye gouges or a kick to the knee but, it doesn’t have to. You can always improvise and do dirty fighting with boxing if you want in self-defense. There is nothing that says you can’t throw a groin kick in their with your punches.

Judo is good too in a similar way to Boxing. You also are provided proof of what you can and cannot do in sparring and competitions. You experience things too you will in a real fight: Fear, pain, exhaustion, winning and losing, determination, choking or arm-locking an an opponet, etc. Judo is another art that a lot of people recommed for basic self-defense. You can improvise and fight dirty with it also. You can use it’s grappling and use strikes against your attacker on the ground.

Both are sports and are not meant for street self-defense exactly. So, they won’t help you with weapons or multiple attackers. You won’t have specific training how to deal with those things (or some other things that they neglect like kicking defenses). But, that doesn’t mean you can’t improvise and use their skills to overcome situations you aren’t trained for specifically.

So, take Judo and Boxing I think they work well together. They should help you in a self-defense situation. Shotokan is ok if you rather take it over Boxing. But, I don’t think it would help you as much as Boxing. But, either Shotokan or Boxing, Judo helps them both by providing grappling and groundfighting skills that both of them lack. I think you are on the right track.

i have never needed anything more then shotokan for self defense.

it more on how you train then the style you choose. if you have a good instructor and train correctly you will only need one style.
many styles such as karate and japanese jujutsu are complete systems

You have the combo that is similar to what I use (TKD/Judo/Boxing) and it has always served me well in real fights.

Yes, you really only "need" one, but the three of them together give you a good grasp of the basics. You’ll probably end up favoring one out of the three, but that is ok.

Judo and boxing is exellent, but not so much for karate beacuse karate punch is different from boxing so it will istract your boxing skills. Best combo for street fight or self defence:
Combo 1) muay thai, brazilian jujitsu 2) boxing, judo, muay thai 3) wing chun kung fu, Jeet kune do

Got something to say?
