How Many Shots Fired Is Enough In A Self Defense Situation?
August 21, 2010
I am a little trigger happy kind of guy and I fear that I will empty the whole magazine at the evil criminal who attempts to harm me, my family, and my property. If a bad evil deranged psychotic criminal attempts to hurt me or my family, I will empty all 15 rounds of .40 S&W Golden Sabers into that living turd.
How many shots is enough for YOU in a home defense or self defense situation?

Got something to say?

Enough to kill your "living turd", and a few extra for luck.
I would only shoot until he falls, evaluate the situation and if he is still has a weapon that it looks like he could utilize, I would shoot a couple more times. My guess would be somewhere between 1 and 10, depending on your capability and the capability of the round that you chose.
enough is when the bad guy and all his buddies (if applicable) are totally dead or is no longer a threat.
you can shoot 15 rounds, I can dump about 210 rounds of combloc 7.62x39mm into one or more people more or less without thinking. those bullets will go thru anything- walls, floors, furnishings, appliances, cars, leaving the bad guys no place to hide. If I get into a raging gun battle within the house I might actually expend all 210 rounds. but most likely the bad guy draws and I cut him down with a controlled burst of rapid fire (3-5 shots).
if 210 rounds isn’t enough I switch to a different gun, more rounds, more things turning into powder, and another gun, more firepower, more penetration, bigger holes, etc.
In Canada, you can go to jail for doing that, thats how stupid the government is, you have to almost have a loaded gun to your head in order to kill someone without being charged, and at that point your dead. But either way its gotta be done so I would use enough so they are clearly dead, but you never know if they got someone else with them or outside and you wont be loaded for the next guy. After they are immobilized they’re not worth the ammunition.
Do what you have to but in court you tell the judge you only shot once, thats all you remember…….LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!click, click, click…………………..
I asked this question of a police detective friend years ago, and he told me that there are 3 basic rules of self defense with a gun:
1) Don’t carry a gun unless you are trained to shoot it.
2) Don’t draw and aim your gun unless you are willing to shoot.
3) If you do shoot, shoot to kill, and make sure that the guy is dead.
He said he heard about a case where a man broke into a house in the middle of the night, and the homeowner warned him 3 times that he had a gun. When the man approached, the homeowner shot him in the leg. The homeowner called the cops, and gave the guy first aid. After the bad guy was arrested, he sued the homeowner, saying that he walked into the house by mistake because he was drunk, and the homeowner shot him for no reason. Luckily, before it went to court, the judge threw the case out, but the homeowner was still out the cost of a lawyer to defend himself.
So the moral of this story is that if you find yourself in this sort of situation, make sure the police only get one side of the story.
for me none, im afraid of guns
you shoot until the threat is neutralized. It that takes 15 shots, so be it. However, do not get into a panic and just empty the gun. Better to fire a couple rounds, then access your threat. Maybe your center punch rounds did not do the trick, maybe you have to put a couple in the brain pan.
Also keep in mind that an excessive number of holes in your adversary can suggest to a jury that you are a "little trigger happy kind of guy" – and therefore guilty of excessive or unnecessary force.
It’s however many you want. its self defense lol. whenever you feel safe and maybe a little bit more too
one to the head is all i need
I wouldnt stop shooting till i ran out and then i’d use my gun as a club for a while
When in doubt, empty the magazine .
Well the LAPD sees to unload the whole mag. when they shoot. You may not have as good of a lawyer. Do what you need to do and no more.
just one.
i’ll shoot until im out of bullets! ah haha
Id stop shooting when they stopped moving. Hopefully i can control the urge i would have to put an extra one in the head, i dont think that would go over well…
Until they are no longer a threat. How many is that? Who knows?
I’d empty all my mags if it were you.
Shoot until they stop trying to harm you.
I’ll stop firing after the target goes down. Besides, I always fire a CQB pistol in multiples of either two or three shots BEFORE I’ll pause to look over the top of the slide to see how I’m doing. (Inside 7 1/2 yards I’ll simply, ‘square up’ the back of the slide and let the first three go – Works for me!)
If you intend to, ‘dump the magazine’ at every threat you’re confronted with, then, I’d have to say you’re doing everything all wrong. There’s few things worse than having to stand in front of an upright (healthy) target with an empty gun in your hands!
