How Many of You Have Used Your Gun in Self Defense?

November 24, 2009

Question..how many people have actually used their gun?

I am trying to guage how many people have actually used their gun in an assault or home invasion situation in self defense. It seems that gun proponents often use this as a reason for owning a gun. Is it as common as they make it sound? This is not intended to be an argument for or against gun ownership. It is merely an empirical analysis on gun ownership.

The percentage of people actually confronted by a dangerous criminal is so small that not many people actually have to defend themselves with a handgun. The real question you should be asking is how many people that were victims of violent crimes wish they had a gun at the time of the incident. That would give you an honest analysis. It is better to be prepared and never need it, than it is to need it and not be prepared.

I used a rifle to stop an idiot from beating a friend of mine senseless – does that count?

He was *much* bigger than she was. NOT a fair fight.

As the owner of a 12 gauge I don't need to actually use it, some dumb breaking into my ouse wil just have to hear me c o c k it and they'll be changing thier underwear and thier mind about breaking into my house.

It's happened once, and I haven't had a problem since, I guess that punk told his friends.

I have not used it in that capacity, but I am always ready for the first low life to try to abuse my family. I am a man of small body and I know I need something to equalize myself against unknown criminals. I have gone many times to a shooting range to practice my accuracy, which makes me confident that once I use it, I know I will hit my target.

its the threat of using a gun that keeps people out. if a person knew that you didnt have a gun then they would be less frightened of breaking in. gun ownership helps even if you never take the gun out of your gun safe.

yes, all the time. it happens all over the country but you see, the mainstream media will never report such events because it goes against their agenda. Do you honestly think they would talk about an armed citizen thwarting an attaker and saving someone's life on CNN? My father and my husband have both used their guns as a detterent to crime. They were both on separate occasions almost attacked but pulled their guns and the would-be criminals ran off like cowards. Not a shot was fired. They are both liscenced to carry and I am very glad of it. You would probably be very surprised to learn just how many crimes are averted because of armed citizens. But you'll never hear about these things on the news. Go ahead, I LOVE getting thumbs down…bring 'em on!

I have known a great many people that have used their guns in self defense, and not always by firing them!

Sometimes just "showing a little steel" can make the perp back off (showing is fine, but be ready to back it up!).

During a year long stay in "the bad part" of a major city … among just my friends and co-workers:

10 home invasions were cut short. (Three by the homeowner yelling "I've got a gun aimed at that door, break in and get shot!").

    5 assaults were stopped cold.

3 Convenience store robberies were unsuccessful.

1 murder was unsuccessful (the perp brought a knife to a gun fight!).

We live in a f***ed up time! Police are overworked and underpaid. Response times get longer during "high demand times".

No easy solution out there, remove the guns from the law abiding citizens … give the perps the advantage (they will still buy their guns from a "sidewalk entrepreneur", the same cat that provides illegal drugs).

Why give the perps the advantage? At least let the citizens keep the ability to have similar weapons!

How can a 125 pound woman stop a 250 pound man from raping her? With a little help from her friends, Colt, Ruger, and Smith and Wesson!

Got something to say?
