How long to wait before schools pay you for your martial arts classes?
August 20, 2010
I ran a six week martial arts course at a school which ended with the school term in July. They have not paid me and yet another two schools I have taught at paid very promptly, within a few days of the final class. as the money involved is not small – £300 – and I have been told the cheque has been signed off – but I still have not had it – plus the fact my emails and phone calls since have not been returned, I am not sure what to do in this situation. What would you do? Thank you.

Got something to say?

Many school have a net 30 on invoices. But programs like martial arts are generally funded through a grant. You may need to speak to someone in authority like the superintendent.
I think that as you have tried contacting through emails and phone calls, you should travel to te school and talk directly to them.
Usually its about a month between them receiving the invoice and sending out the payment.
If it’s any longer than this you need to contact the school first off, then the local education authority if you still get no joy.
Good luck with it!
Demand, then threaten to sue, if they still fail, then demand your money back in court.
Write them a letter and sign it. Make it basic and to the point and leave your contact information. If you don’t get paid in a couple weeks, then think about taking them to small claims court.
If it is a Local Authority school complain to the County Council’s education department. If not, write and threaten with Small Claims court action.
you should go down to the school and see if you can talk to the person.
the amount of time they take to pay can vary though, i know one place i taught at took a month to pay me, because of they way they did there billing. but they also told me thats how long it would take, they should be able to give you a time frame.
I always get the money up front…period. Reasons? Because I do not trust people to pay me "after" I have done the work. If you do this again you need to use a contract and maybe get a percentage up front with the rest due the last day of the class. Always protect yourself and your income from people like this by always protecting yourself first.
