What is your idea of a womens self defense course?

Question about a womens self defense course..

What are it's elements and what concerns does it cover?

Actually, I should ask what would you like to have it cover.
I would suggest to all the women to purchase a book called THE GIFT OF FEAR. Without understanding what happens to you when a violent attack occurs martial arts will not save you but with both together you will win out.

When that knife is suddenly pressed to your throat or that gun shoved in your face your heart rate will go from 60bpm to 200 bpm in about 3 seconds you will have tunnel vision lose all fine motor skills and the ability to think constructively.

The book covers various scenarios from actual rape and spousal/relationship abuse cases. In all of them there was a point were a different decision than the one they made would have saved them from the ordeal.

65% of rapes and assaults are commited by someone the victim knows a family member or a co worker or a casual aquaintance. Once you know and can recognize the danger signals you can prepare yourself phsycologicaly to meet the assault physically or escape before it gets that far. When you are prepared psychologically the heart rate will still go up as the body prepares for conflict but not to the crippling extent previously stated.

TED BUNDY was charming charismatic well dressed handsome and intelligent and a serial killer .The book also covers his methods and how to recognize them. His most common act was "little boy lost" and "helpless male in need of your help" the opposite of that is someone insisting you need help and wont take no for an answer.

Pre-emption or recognizing someone for what they are should be your primary technique martial arts your last resort. He probably wont be scruffy looking or jump out of an alley on a dark street or be hiding in your closet when you come home. Gun point abductions happen all the time in broad daylight and rapes occur in bedrooms with a party going on in the next room.

By all means study a martial art learn to use everyday items as weapons attract as much attention as possible .They are looking for easy prey, not noisy prey that attracts unwelcome attention.

Walk proud and confident act confident and dont let the confidence of knowing martial arts let you think you can handle it at any point if it turns nasty like everything there is a point of no return you will lose if it gets that far . Recognize the signs early and get out of there and you may never have to put your skills to the test.

Self Defense: The Womanly Art of Self-Care Intuition and Choice

Helpful Customer Reviews:

Excellent and thorough coverage of self-defense. 5 out of 5 stars.
This book is still the best coverage of womens self-defense that I have seen. Many self-defense books perpetrate such myths as that most assaults are by strangers and talk about only the poke-em-in-the-eye level of defense. This book gives good context, realistic information, and practical ways to practice. While nothing can replace in-person training for learning the physical skills, this book provides excellent photos that are a good start. I teach self-defense to women, and recommend this book highly to my students. If you buy only one self-defense book, it should be …this one.

If you only read one book on self-defense, this is it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Debbie Leung is among the earliest teachers of women’s self-defense in our generation. She was a founder of FIST (Feminists in Self-Defense Training) in 1979, and trained in martial arts for decades.

What makes this book the best, even 15 years after it’s publication, is it’s recognition of the real risks facing women, along with the simple and effective choices we have. Chapters on prevention, intuition, awareness and self-care are beautifully and clearly written.

The section on physical skills is likewise clear and well-illustrated. These are techniques adaptable for all women! Unlike most other self-defense books written for women, the models look like people we may know (and identify with), rather than youthful long-limbed athletes. The photos quality is exceptionally clear.

This book, unlike most others, concludes with a chapter on caring for yourself (and for others) after an assault; this is critical since one’s experience of post-traumatic stress disorder more often hinges on one’s treatment by others after an assault than on what happened during the assault.

I’ve been teaching self-defense for over a decade, and always recommend this book above all others. I’ve re-read it several times, and constantly find new insights after each reading. It’s as fresh today as it was 15 years ago, and should be read by anyone concerned with women’s safety.

This review is from: See Sally Kick Ass: A Woman’s Guide to Personal Safety (Hardcover)

There are two parts to this book: prevention tips (Attitude/Awareness/Avoidance) and self-defense techniques (Action).

First, the prevention: The author provides a very comprehensive set of personal safety tips to address/avoid almost every dangerous situation you could imagine yourself in…and then some! (Is there anything he hasn’t thought of?) Although I’ve always thought of myself as a “careful” person, I realize now, I could be doing a whole lot more to make myself and my family safer. As I read the book, I repeatedly found myself wondering WHY???…I wasn’t already doing the very things being suggested.

About a week after reading the book, I realized I had started looking at everything (my house, my workplace, my daily routine, etc.) differently…from a more “safety conscious” viewpoint. I wasn’t really thinking about the book, but one day, I caught myself pausing, assessing a certain situation and making an alternative plan of action. I knew then that the book was “working”.

The book would be worth buying on the merits of the prevention tips, alone, but there are also several great self-defense techniques illustrated in the section on “Action”.

The techniques are described, step by step, with photos to illustrate each one. (The close-ups of certain Aikido “hand-techniques” are especially helpful!) The photos are a good guide for actually learning the technique; the reader should get with a partner to “try them out” and see how it feels to apply them, and by taking turns…also feel what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the action. It’s surprising how powerful these basic Aikido techniques are; they’re simple, direct and “to the point”.

Although specifically directed toward women, a lot of the safety tips would benefit anyone…regardless of gender. The book addresses safety issues for children, teenagers, the elderly and…even has a special section on foreign travel (a very important issue these days!). I’ve already given several copies to friends and family. Quite simply: it doesn’t get any more complete than this! Go, Sally…GO!!!

This book focuses primarily on doing all the things so that you never have to demonstrate your self-defense skills, but it does teach you how to handle an assailant if necessary.
