VERY stupid boxing question?

October 2, 2009

Question

I hear boxing is great exercise and they are offering a womens course at the hospital where I conduct my research. I don’t really want to wail on someone else and I don’t want someone else wailing on me. Are there benefits I’m not thinking of? I want to do it because the training is intense and I want to learn self defense…but I don’t want to be punched. Give me some pros/cons?

Jujutsu Waza or Randori?

August 21, 2009

Question

I’ve been taking jujutsu for 4 months now. We are taught plenty of waza but the little things almost seem as though they are passed over,(Blocks, katas, kicks, and strikes) it almost seems as though it’s a womens self defense class (because of all the waza).

I want to advance to another level as i have some training (military vet) and I am able to hold my own during randori. should I be concerned with learning more waza vs the subtleties of the art, and even though I am not corrected very often during a technique should I be worried about advancing to another belt(yellow) or am i just being arrogant of my abilites?

What is your idea of a womens self defense course?

July 6, 2009

Question about a womens self defense course..

What are it's elements and what concerns does it cover?

Actually, I should ask what would you like to have it cover.
I would suggest to all the women to purchase a book called THE GIFT OF FEAR. Without understanding what happens to you when a violent attack occurs martial arts will not save you but with both together you will win out.

When that knife is suddenly pressed to your throat or that gun shoved in your face your heart rate will go from 60bpm to 200 bpm in about 3 seconds you will have tunnel vision lose all fine motor skills and the ability to think constructively.

The book covers various scenarios from actual rape and spousal/relationship abuse cases. In all of them there was a point were a different decision than the one they made would have saved them from the ordeal.

65% of rapes and assaults are commited by someone the victim knows a family member or a co worker or a casual aquaintance. Once you know and can recognize the danger signals you can prepare yourself phsycologicaly to meet the assault physically or escape before it gets that far. When you are prepared psychologically the heart rate will still go up as the body prepares for conflict but not to the crippling extent previously stated.

TED BUNDY was charming charismatic well dressed handsome and intelligent and a serial killer .The book also covers his methods and how to recognize them. His most common act was "little boy lost" and "helpless male in need of your help" the opposite of that is someone insisting you need help and wont take no for an answer.

Pre-emption or recognizing someone for what they are should be your primary technique martial arts your last resort. He probably wont be scruffy looking or jump out of an alley on a dark street or be hiding in your closet when you come home. Gun point abductions happen all the time in broad daylight and rapes occur in bedrooms with a party going on in the next room.

By all means study a martial art learn to use everyday items as weapons attract as much attention as possible .They are looking for easy prey, not noisy prey that attracts unwelcome attention.

Walk proud and confident act confident and dont let the confidence of knowing martial arts let you think you can handle it at any point if it turns nasty like everything there is a point of no return you will lose if it gets that far . Recognize the signs early and get out of there and you may never have to put your skills to the test.
