Are there any good books on martial arts history? Books like The Original Martial Arts Encyclopedia. I am interested in the history of martial arts from Asia, and not Europe or America.

What type of martial arts make good cross-training for Hockey?

My 8 year old son is starting his hockey season again and loves every second out on the ice, but I’ve noticed he gets easily discouraged and talks a lot about not being as "quick" as the other boys. Last season I talked to his coach and he suggested that I enroll him in gymnastics or martial arts to help with agility and strength. Since there are no gymnastics classes near by, what type of martial arts should I be looking into?

What sort of martial arts are practical in regular life?

Can you tell me practical martial arts that I will be able to use to defend myself from attackers. Not stuff that involves like chi and meditation, but like boxing and karate, stuff like that. would mma also be a good choice?

Whats the purpose of martial arts when you can jsut buy a can of mace?

For 10 bucks you can buy a can of mace, where as martial arts you will end up spending thousands for something that will work only in certain situations.

What is a good martial arts camp for me?

I am thirteen, know no chinese and have never done martial arts. I am looking for a camp that would give me a big boost. I would like it to be out of the United States so I can learn their language. I’m not looking for a school that teaches a show martial art, I want an effective self defence martial art.
