In martial arts, what's the best way to deal with an opponent who keeps advancing towards you while striking?

They say that, in martial arts, you should develop an attack and retreat strategy, that is, you should get in there and throw a few strikes, then get back out and defend for a bit, using footwork/bobbing/weaving all the while to evade your opponent’s strikes. Well, isn’t this strategy rendered ineffective if your opponent keeps advancing towards you while striking all the way? Especially if he’s advancing quickly. How can you go "in and out" then? What do you do in this case?

For self-defense, should I buy a bowie knife or a tactical knife?

For some reason, we aint allowed have a gun at our house because of the neighborhood we live in. So we keep them at my brothers place. I want to buy a knife for self-defense because I have some skill with them, but cant decide between a bowie knife or a tactical knife. What would you get and why?

Why do people think that a man cant hit a woman back in self defence?

It annoys me that people think that because men usually are stronger than women that they do not have a right to self defence against a woman and that he has to take whatever she throws at him.

Mine: Enter the Dragon, because that brought Martial Arts films to the U.S.A.
I love Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon though, because I used to dream like this before I ever saw this movie (the floating running thing they do) and I loved those dreams.

What hand protection should I buy if I’m training for self defense?

I have a Muay Thai heavy bag but I don’t have any protection for my hands, what should I get?
I like the feel of MMA gloves and/or wraps, and hate wearing big gloves.
(I’m training for self-defense so if I do get into a fight, I would be fighting bare fist).)
Also, would I need protection anywhere else? (I’m not getting struck, I’m using a punching bag).
