What is a good submission hold for an amateur to learn for self defense?

I don’t know much about martial arts, just a little karate experience. I would like to learn a good submission hold for self defense. I don’t expect to learn it in a few minutes, I’m willing to spend hours practicing it.

Wheelchair Martial Arts

Is there any martial arts a wheelchair bound guy can learn and use it effectively?

So if you practiced the martial arts for 2 to 3 years, you can be good enough to defend yourself from street thug even if you’re wheelchair bound. So is there such a martial arts?
