Using A Machete in Self Defense?

What would happen in court if you kill an intruder with a machete in self defense?
There are always situations where a person breaks into a house then gets shot by the house owner in self defense, but what if a person instead had a machete or sword and hacked the person to pieces in self defense?
Guns put nice little holes into the body, but a large blade would take off limbs or disembowel a person, how would people in court react when you say you acted in self defense?
